Duration and main activities: The project is planned for three years, starting from 1 June 2010 until 1 June 2013 and will include Three Sessions and related inter-session activities. The Project starts from the First Summer Session "Theoretical Approaches to European Security: Politicization, Securitization, and Beyond” which is to be held on July 5-16, 2010, at Odessa Mechnikov National University, Odessa, Ukraine. It will focus on the possibilities of applying a variety of theoretical departures to the study of the EU security actorship.

 

Goal and main idea: The work of this project will be aimed at identifying a wider spectrum of conceptual approaches and putting together all the meaningful pieces of theoretical response to the urgent questions of professional debate. The design of the project under consideration is going to be focused on the search for important theoretical and methodological niches that affect the current understanding of security phenomenon in University curricula. The project is focused on long-term collegial collaboration of young academics from the region and leading international scholars to work towards fulfilling the following tasks:
- To form the core group (25 Seminar participants dedicated to work continuously for the entire 3-year period of the Project) of the individuals involved in the study and teaching of European Security in the target region.
- To develop and introduce the series of teaching courses (both mandatory and elective) in the field of European Security/ European Studies/ International Relations in the target region’s Universities. This will take place within a period of three forthcoming years of the Project and will be accomplished through a variety of collaborative activities of the group of young faculty participants from the region and the international team of resource faculty.
- To address particular thematic issues within the subject of European Security/ European Studies/ International Relations as means of development of research and teaching.
The project is organised as part of the Regional Seminar for Excellence in Teaching (ReSET) of the Open Society Institute's International Higher Education Support Program (HESP).

Target region: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.
Eligibility: The Project is dedicated to Junior Faculty (up to 35 years of age) fully involved in teaching and research based at one of the institutions of higher education in target region countries. The Project is open to young teachers and researchers from institutes of higher education of NIS working in teaching European security, security studies, European integration, EU enlargement, foreign policy analysis, political science, conflict prevention, etc.
