The Centre for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies at University of Toronto will be hosting a two-day conference February 25-26, 2008 entitled "EU Enlargement: Internal Problems, External Challenges ," organized by the Centre's graduate students. The conference aims to examine the changing dynamics of European citizenship and identity, security, and sociopolitical integration. We are seeking qualified candidates to present papers and engage in subsequent roundtable discussions.

Following the January 2007 enlargement of the European Union to 27 countries, a host of questions have arisen regarding future enlargement. The continuing integration of post-Communist states within the social and legal confines of European society has posed significant challenges vis-à-vis the internal structure of the Union and its external relations, and the changing nature of European identity.

The conference will be composed of three panels concerning:
- Attitudes of the West Towards Enlargement
- The EU & the East: the Western Balkans and Ukraine
- The Turkish Question

We invite diverse and innovative papers on the political, economical and social aspects, concerning the following:
- Security and Conflict Management
- Enlargement Fatigue
- Socioeconomic Disparities between East and West
- European Identity
- Turkish and Russian Factors in EU Enlargement
- The EU and the Western Balkans
